CoaguVet™ — A Veterinary Hemostatic Agent
CoaguVet is a topical hemostatic product designed to rapidly control bleeding in animals. It is particularly interesting for veterinarians performing surgery, dental extractions, treating traumatic wounds, or managing difficult-to-control hemorrhage.
It is not a drug, blood coagulation analyzer, or systemic clotting agent. It is a locally applied
2. How does CoaguVet work?
CoaguVet contains plant-derived polysaccharide particles that promote hemostasis through a predominantly physical mechanism.
- Absorbs fluid: The particles rapidly absorb water from blood at the wound surface.
- Concentrates clotting components: Platelets, coagulation proteins, and other blood constituents become concentrated locally.
- Accelerates clot formation: The concentrated components facilitate the patient's natural coagulation process.
- Forms a barrier: The resulting clot and hydrated material help seal the bleeding surface.
Unlike chemical cauterizing agents, it does not depend on burning tissue. Unlike topical thrombin products, its principal mechanism does not require supplying an exogenous coagulation enzyme.

3. What are its veterinary applications?
| Clinical application | Potential benefit |
|---|---|
| Dental extractions | Controls bleeding from extraction sockets |
| Routine soft-tissue surgery | Helps manage persistent oozing |
| Tumor removal | Controls diffuse bleeding surfaces |
| Liver surgery or injury | May help with parenchymal bleeding |
| Lacerations and traumatic wounds | Rapid local hemorrhage control |
| Emergency procedures | An additional tool when conventional hemostasis is difficult |
These applications are promoted by the manufacturer. Importantly, CoaguVet should complement, not replace, ligatures, electrosurgery, direct pressure, and appropriate surgical hemostasis.
Stops Bleeding in Seconds+1
4. How is it used?
CoaguVet comes in two principal forms:
- Powder: Applied directly to the accessible bleeding surface, with pressure as needed to establish hemostasis.
- Dental extraction foam strips: Positioned in the bleeding extraction socket or other appropriate surgical site.
The material can remain in the wound and that it is absorbable, reducing the need for subsequent removal. The exact amount, pressure duration, and handling should follow the product instructions.
For a severed or actively bleeding major vessel, conventional surgical vascular control remains essential.
5. How effective is it? What is the scientific evidence?
CoAg Medical reports two relevant experimental investigations:
- Swine hemorrhage study: The manufacturer describes successful hemorrhage control in pigs with experimentally severed femoral arteries, including survival after otherwise potentially fatal injuries.
- Rabbit tissue compatibility study: A four-week implantation study reportedly found no product-attributable adverse effects or clinically significant tissue reactions.
These findings are encouraging, but the publicly accessible evidence is limited.

8. My clinical assessment
CoaguVet appears to be an inexpensive and potentially useful addition to the veterinary surgical and dental armamentarium, especially for diffuse oozing, extraction sockets, and wounds where conventional hemostasis is inconvenient.
Its relatively low purchase price makes a limited clinical evaluation attractive. However, I would want additional independent evidence regarding its performance in dogs and cats, tissue healing, infection risk, and retained material before adopting it routinely for internal surgical procedures.
CoaguVet offers a practical local hemostatic approach, with particularly interesting potential in veterinary dentistry. It warrants consideration, but manufacturer claims should be evaluated against published clinical evidence.
